The nouvelles are, according to the authority on French Literature—Professor George Saintsbury "undoubtedly the first work of literary prose in French Author: Antoine de la Sale.

Housed in the University of Glasgow’s Special Collections is the only known surviving manuscript copy of the 15th century French book Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, an anthology of lewd and lascivious stories to entertain the toffs at the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.

The book’s central themes are sex, religious hypocrisy, extra-martial. The Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles is a collection of stories supposed to be narrated by various persons at the court of Philippe le Bon, and collected together by Antoine de la Sale in the midth century/5(5).

The first person—so far as I am aware—to throw any doubt on his claim was the late Mr. Thomas Wright, who edited an edition of the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, published by Jannet, Paris, He maintained, with some show of reason, that as the stories were told in Burgundy, by Burgundians, and the collected tales were “edited” by a.

Les Cent Nouvelles nouvelles, a mid-fifteenth-century Burgundian collection of tales, told over the lively dinner-table of Philippe Le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, was conceived as light-hearted tales, it is claimed, were recounted by numerous narrators present at the table, but put in writing by one author, whose identity remains a mystery.

In spite of its title, however, there is nothing novel in the incidents upon which the ‘Nouvelles’ are based. Their novelty consists in their high-bred brightness and vivacity, their delicately shaded and refined but cruel sarcasm.

Intertextual Masculinity in French Renaissance Literature book. Rabelais, Brantôme, and the Cent nouvelles nouvelles. By David P.

LaGuardia. Edition 1st Edition. First Published eBook Published 6 May and exempla collections in relation to the Cent nouvelles nouvelles, Rabelais's Tiers Livre, and Brantôme's Dames galantes.

The Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles is an exciting manuscript because even though the stories may have similar themes, each tale is lewder and more absurd than the last. Some of the tales offer a small dose of morality, but most focus on subjects like the hypocrisy of the clergy or the extreme measures people take to deceive their partners.
